Let’s be honest. AI search engines are transforming the digital landscape in ways we couldn’t have imagined just a few years ago. They’re completely revolutionizing how people discover information, products, and services online. And love it or hate it, it isn’t going anywhere.
AI is chatty. It’s a conversation. It suggests specifics instead of giving long lists of website links. And people love it. That last fact is one that online business owners really need to pay attenton to. There is no page two with AI. The ability to be part of a comparison of results is dramatically reduced – it either suggest YOU – or you are invisible.
If you own a website and rely on the internet for sales and lead generation, and this isn’t on your radar yet, it absolutely should be – and quickly.
While traditional SEO has evolved over decades with well-established playbooks, AI search optimization is like the Wild West; exciting, full of opportunity, but largely uncharted. Optimising websites and content for AI doesnt even seem to have a universally recognised name yet. (I call it AIO (AI Optimisation) because that makes most sense to me.)
While this can leave people feeling a little blind in regards of “what do I do about optimisation” – it also brings with it a land of opportunity. Here’s the reality: businesses that adapt early to this AI-driven search revolution will thrive, while those who ignore it risk becoming increasingly invisible online.
Imagine your competitors being quoted directly in AI search results while your content gets overlooked entirely. This isn’t a far-future scenario – it’s happening right now as millions of users shift to AI-powered search tools. Even Google is prioritising AI results in it’s search. What used to be the coveted #1 spot on Google, is now way down the page. You can go and test this right now – search for something in Google. Everything above-the-fold is AI generated.
But don’t worry! The exciting part is that you don’t need a PhD in machine learning or a team of AI specialists to make your website more AI-friendly. In fact, many of the principles are refreshingly straightforward and human-centred.
I’m going to walk you through the basics of how to position your content for this new era, without drowning you in technical jargon or complicated processes. This is your opportunity to get ahead of the curve while your competitors are still catching up.
The following guide is not a complete technical know-how guide that gives you all the answers – but it will point you in the right direction and give you a good understanding of what needs to be done and where you need to brush up.
Why AI Search Matters
First off, AI search isn’t just Google with a fancy hat on. Tools like Perplexity, Claude, and ChatGPT don’t just link to websites – they summarize content and answer questions directly. This means fewer results are shown to users which, in turn, means fewer clicks to your site and products unless you’re properly set up for it.
If traditional search was about ranking #1, AI search is about being the source that gets quoted. It has many overlaps in strategies with traditional SEO. Its not a completely different mindset – in fact many of the changes are quite subtle. If you already do DIY SEO on your website, these shifts can easily be adopted with a little learning and effort.
Simple DIY Steps to Get Your Site AI-Ready
Create genuinely helpful, clear content.
No change here really. This has been traditional SEO advice for many years. The difference here is that keyword optimisation can almost be entirely forgotten. AI search tools love content that directly answers questions, provides unique insights, or solves specific problems. They’re surprisingly good at spotting waffle and they are not infuenced by keyword stuffing – they understand the semantics of language better than most humans.
Structure your content logically.
Use proper headings (H1, H2, H3), short paragraphs, and bullet points. AI tools scan content much like humans do, looking for well-organized information. In many ways you could get away with this – to an extent – with traditional SEO, but AI seems to prefer content that has truly flowing structure. So use heading properly.
Focus on E-E-A-T.
That’s Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness. AI search increasingly prioritizes content from genuine experts who know what they’re on about. If you have an existing client base, start asking for reviews. If you can offer information that helps your customers, get writing blog posts and guides. If relevant, start putting case studies out there – and when possible add relevant reviews. Anything you can do that increases the online perception of E-E-A-T is a worthy use of your time.
Cite your sources properly.
AI search engines check references. If you make claims, back them up with links to reputable sources. If you say “A recent study finds,,,,” then link to the study. Even if you are the authority and you’re not quoting external sources of information, and only providing your own knowledge, it still works to enhance this with further reading. Check out the bottom of this articel and you will find plenty of resources for further reading.
Use schema markup.
This is just code that tells search engines exactly what your content is about. There are free tools that can help you implement this without coding knowledge – but let’s be honest – this can take a bit of technical know how. Free tools will do the basics, but beyond that, even some professional optimisers get schema wrong. In this instance it’s either time to get into the learning zone, or maybe consider hiring a specialist.
What to Avoid
AI-generated fluff.
Ironically, content created by AI tools is often terrible at being found by other AI tools. They can spot their own kind. That said, don’t shy away from using AI tools. Just make sure your input is substantial. A quick prompt saying “Make me a blog post about plumbing in Blackpool” is likely to generate AI fluff. Instead you should alwasy guide the AI right through the article. Think of AI as your writing assistant – not your copywriter.
Keyword stuffing.
Just like traditional search engines, AI search systems penalize content that’s obviously trying to game the system. AI understands language to a very deep level. It is infinitely more advanced that the good old focus on keywords. It understands semantics and the general language expected to be used by a professional in any profession. This is actually great news and puts the playing field where it should be – the better your actual expertise, the better you can write about a certain topic. And AI will know the difference.
Outdated information.
AI search engines tend to prefer recent, relevant content over older material, especially for topics that change quickly. Take this article for example – I’ll need to rewrite it in a few months just because of the sheer speed this landscape is shifting. There are alwasy opportunity for evergreen content (day will always follow night) but for anything specific, make sure content is current and relevant.
The most important thing to remember is that AI search, at its core, is trying to find the most helpful, accurate content for users. This isn’t actually a radical departure from traditional SEO – it’s just more sophisticated at spotting the difference between genuinely useful content and stuff that’s just there to rank.
Quick Wins You Can Implement Today
Update your “About” page to clearly state your expertise and experience. AI search uses this to gauge your authority.
Create an FAQ section that actually answers the questions your customers ask, not just the ones you wish they’d ask.
Review and improve your most important pages for clarity, structure, and depth of information.
Add meaningful headings that summarize the content below them. AI loves a good heading that tells it exactly what follows.
In summary,,,
Remember, getting found in AI search isn’t about tricking algorithms – it’s about genuinely being the best source of information in your field. Do that consistently, and the AI tools will take notice.
And if all this feels like too much faff? That’s what people like me are here for. But at least now you know what we’re actually doing behind the scenes.
